On the occasion of International Women's Day, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Beirut demanding the approval of Lebanon's first law against domestic violence.
Lebanon is viewed as the one of the most liberal countries in the Middle East, but it has no law protecting women from violence by family members.
Journalists say that in Lebanon, one woman is killed by her husband every month on average, while thousands are subjected to physical or verbal abuse every year.
The rally, which coincided with International Women's Day, was led by relatives of victims.
Protesters chanted slogans criticizing judges and forensic specialists whom they accused of falsifying reports on recent murders.
The reason why Arab and Lebanese women are exposed to violence including family violence, rape within marriage and criminal offence is that there is no law that protects them since one of the Lebanese laws does save the rapists from punishment if they marry their victims.
In my opinion, the violence does not solve any problem and it really has
direct influence on women.
If a woman gets hurt physically she will save that experience in her mind and she will have mental pain besides sooner or later. I believe that whatever the reason or the situation is, women should't be exposed to violence!
